Preventative Care

Prevent Decay With Good Oral Health Habits

You have probably heard people say that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and this is certainly true for dental care. While there are a lot of procedures and new technologies out there that can restore your smile, perhaps the most effective way to keep your teeth and mouth healthy is with proper preventive care.

Brushing Twice a Day

To maintain optimal health, make sure you are brushing and flossing your teeth every day, at least two times a day. Start with a quality toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and make sure that you brush all of your teeth. The easiest way to do it is to set a timer for two minutes, and spend about 30 seconds in each “quadrant” of your mouth—the top right, top left, bottom right, and bottom left. Brush with short circular strokes, holding your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to avoid damage to the gums.

It’s also important that you replace your toothbrush often, and use a toothbrush that is appropriate for your mouth. Use only soft or extra soft bristles, and get a new one about every three months, or when it starts to look worn out.

Floss Your Teeth Daily

Perhaps one of the most neglected oral health habits is flossing, but it’s critical to maintain good oral health. When you brush, your toothbrush can only reach three of the five surfaces on each tooth—the surfaces that are touching other teeth cannot be reached with a toothbrush. Failing to floss means you’re missing about 40 percent of your total tooth surface when cleaning your teeth. It only takes about one minute a day to floss, and should be something you add to your routine.

Visiting Your Dentist Regularly

Perhaps the most vital part of good preventive care is seeing your dentist. At Caring Smiles we offer comprehensive exams, cleanings, and other preventive care options to help keep your smile bright. If you have children, we can talk to you about having sealants applied and whether your child needs supplemental fluoride if it’s not already in your drinking water.

Maintaining good oral health is easy when you visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings, and practice good oral health habits in between visits. Come see us at Caring Smiles every six months for your checkups.
